Extending Global Leadership in Carrier Ethernet Services
Grow Revenue with Carrier Ethernet Solutions
To increase revenue and reduce costs, service providers are looking for a migration path toward a single converged infrastructure that will support a wide variety of consumer and business services.
Cisco's Carrier Ethernet Solutions, combined with IP/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) technology, provide the foundation for such an infrastructure and play a pivotal role as a converged network foundation of IP NGN. They provide:
Industry-leading network architecture flexibility: Cisco's broad portfolio of carrier-certified routing, switching, and optical products provide the most flexible range of Carrier Ethernet deployment options in the industry today.
Service-rich infrastructure: A wide range of features helps enable current and future applications, resulting in increased revenue, customer loyalty, and optimized average revenue per user (ARPU). These applications include best-in-class residential voice, video, data, and IP/TV applications; and Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN for business customers.
Market, product, and technology leadership: Cisco solutions are validated through large-scale deployment worldwide, with more than 250 MPLS VPN customers, 1000 optical customers, 14 million VoIP gateway ports, and 10 million video and IP/TV subscribers supported.
Deploy new revenue-generating services for business and residential customers by taking advantage of new Carrier Ethernet products and enhancements from Cisco that will help you transition to IP NGNs:
VPLS Enhancements: Increase Ethernet WAN Flexibility and Scalability
Now available on the Cisco Catalyst 3750 Metro Series switches, the Catalyst 6500 Series switches, the Cisco 7600 Series routers, and the Cisco XR 12000 and 12000 series routers, Hierarchical VPLS uses Ethernet bridging techniques at the edge and MPLS at the core, which improves the scalability of a nonhierarchical VPLS architecture. It helps enable:
New Cisco ME 3400 Series: Single Metro Access Switch, Multiple Services
Purpose-built for service provider Ethernet access, the next-generation, customer-located Cisco ME 3400 Series is the first access switch optimized for delivering both residential triple-play (voice, video, and data) services and business VPN services. It provides the most complete security solution for Metro Ethernet access, including subscriber, switch, and network protection.
New Supervisor Engine and Switching Module: Deliver Intelligent Services at a Smart Cost
The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Supervisor Engine II-Plus-10GE is a 10 Gigabit Ethernet supervisor engine based on Cisco IOS Software that meets the needs of value-conscious enterprise and service provider customers:
Take advantage of nonblocking enhanced switching solutions for converged data, voice, and video networks
Deploy networkwide intelligent services, such as QoS, comprehensive security, and management with optimal control and resiliency
The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series 48-Port 100BASE-X Switching Module can be deployed in enterprise applications for server farms and fiber-to-the-desktop applications, or for Metro Ethernet applications for service providers running point-to-point Fast Ethernet to homes or businesses. This module can utilize mix-and-match optics for maximum deployment flexibility.
New Supervisor Engine 32: High-Performance, Price-Optimized
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series/Cisco 7600 Series Supervisor Engine 32 is a performance-optimized and price-optimized version of the Supervisor Engine 720. While it offers full architecture and feature consistency with the Supervisor Engine 720, it has a 32-Gbps bus-based architecture that does not include or support a switch fabric. It is ideal for the Metro Ethernet access network, small-scale central offices, and broadband aggregation.
Additions to Cisco I-Flex SPAs and SIPs: Modular Interfaces Maximize Connectivity Options
Cisco I-Flex combines shared port adapters (SPAs) and SPA interface processors (SIPs) to help prioritize voice, video, and data services. Interchangeable across Cisco routing platforms, the modular port adapters maximize connectivity options and offer programmable interface processors that deliver line-rate performance.
The new SIPs are:
Cisco 7600 Series/Catalyst 6500 Series SIP 600: Suitable for service provider and enterprise applications, it supports multiple interfaces including 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10-port Gigabit Ethernet, and OC-192/STM-64. The combination of native Layer 2 bridging and Layer 3 routing on the same SIP distinguishes this line card in the market, particularly in Metro Ethernet applications.
Cisco XR 12000/12000 Series SIP 401, 501, and 601: Multirate (2.5-Gbps, 5-Gbps, or 10-Gbps), modular SIPs that host the common SPAs used for interconnecting routers with each other or with other communication devices such as VoIP gateways; mobile network and media gateways; Web servers; storage devices; and Frame Relay, ATM, and Ethernet Layer 2 switches.
Also available are six new SPAs:
Cisco 2-Port OC-48c/STM-16c POS/RPR Shared Port Adapter
Cisco OC-48c/STM-16c ATM Shared Port Adapter
Cisco Channelized STM-1/OC-3 Shared Port Adapter
Cisco 2-Port Gigabit Ethernet Shared Port Adapter
Cisco 8-Port Fast Ethernet Shared Port Adapter
Cisco 8-Port Channelized T1/E1 Shared Port Adapter
New Cisco Carrier Ethernet Optical Solutions: Ethernet over SONET/SDH Extensions
Cisco introduces the following extensions to its Carrier Ethernet optical portfolio:
Ethernet over MPLS support on the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform Multilayer Ethernet (ML) Series of modules extends MPLS to the access network with RSVP-TE and provides intelligent bandwidth management and common control plane with the service-edge layer.
New ML Series 100BASE fiber module for the Cisco ONS 15454 extends Ethernet reach and continues to provide the ML Series efficient bandwidth utilization with differentiated E-LINE/E-LAN services and 50 ms resiliency using RPR.
New Carrier Ethernet (CE) Series 10/100-Mbps Ethernet over SONET/SDH module for the Cisco ONS 15454 and the Cisco ONS 15310-CL SONET Multiservice Platform, for deploying Private-Line Ethernet services over SONET/SDH networks with standards-based GFP, VCAT, or LCAS.
IP SLA monitoring allowing carriers to monitor customer-service quality across a Cisco network as well as measure and report key parameters (such as latency, jitter, and packet loss) for service initiation, fault isolation, and SLA reporting.
10 Gigabit Ethernet Pluggable Transceivers: Extend Your Interface Reach and Options
By offering 10GBASE-ER X2 and XFP modules, Cisco provides a consistent extended-reach connectivity option across its portfolio of switches, routers, and optical multiservice platforms. The Cisco 10GBASE-ZR XENPAK adds an 80-kilometer pluggable interface for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches and Cisco 7600 Series routers.
