Cisco IOS(TM) Software Release 12.0(5)T Ordering & Upgrading

Product Bulletin No. 906

Cisco IOSTM Software Release 12.0T Ordering and Upgrading Information

Cisco IOS® software release 12.0T is an Early Deployment release delivering the latest Cisco IOS functionality and platform support. Cisco IOS release 12.0T, unlike the parallel IOS 12.0 release, integrates new capabilities with each maintenance release.

This T (Technology) release will reach End of Engineering when the next Cisco IOS Major Release becomes available. Ongoing support for the functionality introduced in release 12.0T will be carried forward into the next release.

Packaging Summary

Cisco IOS Ssoftware is packaged into "Feature Sets." Each feature set contains a specisfic subset of Cisco

IOS features.

Cisco IOS Feature Sets are organized into three (3) solution suites:

1. The Base Feature Sets - ENTERPRISE (and ENTERPRISE/APPN), DESKTOP, IP/IPX/AT/DEC, and IP

2. PLUS - Key value-add features with one (1) or more premium features such as: NAT, RMON, ISL, Lane, modem management, or V.120. Exact feature content of the PLUS package varies per platform.

3. Encryption, Firewall and other solution-specific feature sets such as LANFRAD and ISDN

New Product Numbering Format

Effective as of IOS Release 12.0(1) product numbers, used to order Cisco IOS software have assumed a new format.

Product numbers beginning with "SF", "SW", or "INT", will instead begin with "S" (in the case of "SF" or "SW" product numbers) and "I" (in the case of and "I" product numbers).

THIS CHANGE DOES NOT APPLY TO CISCO 1000 and 1005 SERIES SOFTWARE.

How to Upgrade

Cisco IOS software allows software upgrades that cross multiple feature sets and release versions. Upgrading from one feature set to another with greater functionality, regardless of release version, may require the customer to order multiple Feature Licenses.

The following is an example:

The customer has a Cisco 2500 router, running the Cisco IOS Release 11.1 IP Routing (basic) feature set. The customer wants to upgrade to the Cisco IOS Release 12.0T IP/IPX/AT/DEC PLUS. This order crosses two feature sets: oneto get from IP to IP/IPX/AT/DEC, and one to get to IP/IPX/AT/DEC PLUS (basic to PLUS). If the customer is a SMARTnet contract holder, and they wish to obtain their software electronically, they would order:

  • FL25-C-B=

This feature license which provides the entitlements required for the benefit of using the enhanced functionality between IP and IP/IPX/AT/DEC.
  • FL25-P=

This is a feature license which provides the entitlements required for the benefit of using the enhanced functionality between a standard IP/IPX/AT/DEC feature set and the "PLUS" version IP/IPX/AT/DEC PLUS.

If a customer does not hold a SMARTnet contract, then they would order the following:

  • SW25BP-11.3xx=

Software on media.
  • FL25-C-B=

This is a feature license, which provides the entitlements required for the benefit of using the enhanced functionality between IP and IP/IPX/AT/DEC.
  • FL25-P=

This is a feature license which provides the entitlements required for the benefit of using the enhanced functionality between a standard IP/IPX/AT/DEC feature set and the "PLUS" version; IP/IPX/AT/DEC PLUS.

Upgrade Guidelines for SMARTnet Customers

Please note in the SMARTnet Contracts, the term "update" refers to implementing the new version of Cisco IOS Software, and the term "upgrade" refers to migrating to a more robust Feature Set. Because SMARTnet plays such a direct role in the terms and conditions under which customers can upgrade, the following section provides a general description of SMARTnet.

SMARTnet

SMARTnet continues to be a service offering for software maintenance, advance hardware replacement, and technical support required for self-maintenance. SMARTnet requires that each piece of Cisco equipment at the customer's locations must be placed under contract. More specifically this service includes the following:

  • Telephone calls back within one hour from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time for hardware, configuration and software problems, by the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

  • Priority 1 and 2 telephone support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

  • Electronic mail inquires and responses

  • Access to the Cisco Connection On-line (CCO) system

  • Major release software updates via CCO or media upon request

  • A customer can electronically update a feature set covered under SMARTnet from a Cisco IOS software feature set in one release to the same Cisco IOS software feature set in a newer release (for example, from 11.1 IP to 11.2 IP). However, if additional memory is required for the new release SMARTnet does not cover this cost.

The customer can choose to implement a less feature rich Cisco IOS software feature set, but may not implement a more robust Cisco IOS software feature set under any circumstance without going through the upgrade process. The exception to this rule is when features are removed from an Cisco IOS software feature set, then SMARTnet covers implementing the least expensive, more robust Cisco IOS software feature set which contains the required features.

  • Software maintenance release updates via CCO or media upon request

  • One set of new manuals with each software update or CD documentation for each under contract upon request

  • Guaranteed next-business-day delivery of replacement parts, provided the request is received prior to 3:00 p.m. Pacific time

SMARTnet customers may upgrade to a feature set with increased functionality through the following process:

1. Identify the platform and the current feature set being deployed. Look up the platform in the following tables.

2. Identify the current release customer is running and choose appropriate chart.

Find the intersection of the "From" release and feature set and the "To" release and feature set. Make a note of the product codes required. These product codes are Feature Licenses, which grant authorization for use and must be ordered PRIOR to downloading the software from CCO.

3. Proceed to the Cisco Marketplace and into the Internetworking Product Center.

Initiate an on-line order for the Feature License product codes identified from the upgrade tables.

1. Once the order is complete and accepted by the system, the customer may proceed to the Software Products section of CCO:

  • Cisco IOS Software

  • Identify the Cisco IOS Release # (for example: 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 12.0 or 12.0T)

Proceed to transact a software download for the desired feature set.

Upgrade Guidelines for Orders requiring 56-bit Encryption for Destination Outside of the US:

(For a more comprehensive explanation of ordering encryption software, please refer to Product Bulletin #704 , Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(5)T(1) Ordering Procedures and Platform Hardware Support.)

For Software Upgrades, which include 56-bit encryption, the following applies -- regardless of whether the customer has access to CCO for software updates:

Step 1. Select the required feature set for the platform.

Step 2. Select the appropriate feature license to add the 56-bit encryption package on that platform. Since 56-bit encryption is new functionality, a feature license must be ordered to entitle this functionality. The software and 56-bit encryption feature license must be designated as a separate ship set from the rest of the order. If in addition to encryption, other new functionality is required, then select the feature license(s) required.

Do not use the special Export Upgrade part numbers, as they are only for use on new system orders.

For example, if you had a Cisco 7500 series router and wanted the ENTERPRISE/Encryption 56 feature set, from the price list you would order:

  • Encryption 56 feature license -- FR75-56=

  • ENTERPRISE/Encryption 56 -- SW75AT-11.3.1=

The order will be held while Export Control and Regulatory Affairs (ECRA) determines whether the end user is covered under an existing distribution agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce, or if they will require a new license. If a new license is required, U.S. Government export license processing can take from four to six weeks, and may result in denial of the order.

Step 3. Order any other products, as required, including any special feature licenses.

In this example, if the customer currently has the DESKTOP/IBM feature set, they will also need to order:

  • DESKTOP to ENTERPRISE feature license -- FR75-BS-A=

SMARTnet users will have electronic access to updates of their Cisco IOS Software Release feature sets including 56-bit encryption only after they have received an initial media-based upgrade to the release/feature set. Individual end-users will need to go through an on-line screening process before they are granted access to the software on-line.

For questions on the special controls and procedures associated with 56-bit encryption, contact ECRA at:
