Cisco IOS Features for SNA/IP

Introduction

Protect Systems Network Architecture Investment

Many companies that have made a substantial investment in Systems Network Architecture (SNA) applications and devices also operate extensive TCP/IP networks. Cisco Systems Network Architecture/Internet Protocol (SNA/IP) let you provision and manage both SNA and TCP/IP networks. You can eliminate the cost of running two separate networks and improve the availability and performance of SNA networks in the process.

Cisco second-generation SNA Switching Services (SNASw):

  • Provides the only SNA routing function integrated in a router
  • Is available on a full range of Cisco IOS Software powered routers
  • Is a complete and effective solution for fully integrating SNA with TCP/IP

When SNASw is deployed at remote SNA sites, network performance is optimized, and network design and operation is greatly simplified.

Deploy an Integrated Network

Often used along with SNASw, the best in class Cisco Data Link Switching Plus (DLSw+) is the most widely deployed SNA feature. Complementing the Cisco suite of SNA capabilities are the serial tunneling features Serial Tunnel (STUN) and Block Serial Tunnel (BSTUN), which provide TCP/IP transport for a wide variety of asynchronous, bisynchronous, and synchronous serial data. By providing support for Binary Synchronous Communication (Bisync) automated teller machines, asynchronous alarm systems, and more, these features help enable a single, totally integrated TCP/IP network.
