End-of-Sale Announcement for NM-8AM-J and NM-16AM-J

Introduction

Cisco announces the End -of -Sale (EoS) for NM-8AM-J and NM-16AM-J (8-port and 16-port analog modem network module for Japan and Singapore) for the Cisco 2600/3600 Series platforms. This announcement does NOT affect the non -J versions of the NM-8AM and NM-16AM. The major reason for this decision is:

The sales volume of the NM-8AM-J and NM-16AM-J over their lifetimes does not

justify their continued support.

The recommended migration path for customers requiring Analog Modem connectivity in Japan and Singapore are the WIC-1AM and WIC-2AM.

The replacement products and support programs are detailed below. For those interfaces already deployed in the field, the standard Cisco support programs remain in effect.

Support Programs

End-of-Sale refers to the time when certain products are no longer available for new purchases. It does not apply to the service and support programs for those products. Cisco will continue to support the NM-8AM-J and NM-16AM-J network module through our SMARTnet and comprehensive maintenance programs. Customers with either of these service contracts are entitled to free software updates, 24-hour phone support through the Technical Assistance Center, and advanced replacement of hardware for repairs.

Comprehensive maintenance customers also receive onsite service. Customers who do not have a maintenance contract can purchase software updates and hardware repair services from Cisco to meet specific requirements rather than full-service coverage. Cisco is committed to providing software support for a minimum of two years and hardware support for a period of five years after the EoS date.

Key Benefits of WIC-1AM and WIC-2AM

•Internal analog modem dialup capability—Internal modems allow simple setup of a remote router. There is no separate external power, no cables, and everything is in one chassis.

•Support for speeds up to 56K (V.90 specification)—When dialing out to a digital endpoint, this feature allows users to achieve maximum data transfer rates, equating to faster file transfers, speedier Web access, and faster e-mail downloads.

•Cisco IOS Dial Access Software—Cisco IOS Software provides a broad range of features for remote router management and dial backup, including:

–Reverse Telnet support for LAN-based dial-out and fax-out

–Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Multilink PPP (MLPPP), and Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP)

–TACACS+, Radius, and PPP password security

–Auto-sensing Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), Transmission Control Protocol/IP (TCP/IP), AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA), and AppleTalk Control Protocol (ATCP)

The differences between the NM-8AM-J and NM-16AM-J and the WIC-1AM and WIC-2AM modules are outlined in Table 4 below.
