These release notes provide the latest information available for Cisco Performance Visibility Manager 1.0.1 (Cisco PVM). This update includes instructions for installing the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 software patch. This patch brings your Cisco PVM 1.0.1 release to the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 level.

Introduction

Cisco PVM is a centralized network management tool that enhance the Network Analysis Module (NAM) for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches, 7600 Series routers, and the Cisco Branch Routers Series. An enterprise network encapsulating multiple NAMs is easily managed using this centralized network analysis module. Cisco PVM is designed to:

Give end users visibility into their networks and applications.

Collect, aggregate, and correlate data from multiple NAMs and network devices.

Provide critical performance information through a graphical user interface (GUI) for troubleshooting, traffic analysis, monitoring, and capacity planning.

View alarms showing deviations from an established baseline of network and application traffic flows.

Collect application response time (ART) data from several NAMs and correlate the data to provide end-to-end response time information for applications.

Monitor the network continuously to identify network performance problems so that they can be resolved before end users are affected.

Provide a consistent and complete assessment of performance with comprehensive, pre-configured reports.

Cisco PVM is a highly scalable and distributable real-time data collection, correlation, and aggregation engine providing a centralized and integrated end-to-end (E2E) network view. It adds value to Cisco's NAM Traffic Analyzer, as well as other applicable Cisco performance and traffic management product suites.

Data collection and aggregation from multiple Cisco NAMs

Provides a high-level, operational perspective of the network end-to-end in order to quickly identify trouble spots.

Traffic and bandwidth analysis including Top-N analysis

Identifies the types of traffic running in the network to give full visibility to the performance of your network and application resources. Identifies the top talkers, the top protocols, the most utilized links, etc.

Application Response Time collection and correlation

Identifies if the response-time problem is caused by the network or the application server.

Real-time traffic monitoring and alerts based on threshold settings and baselining

Automatically profiles and monitors your network and application behavior. This proactive approach is essential in rectifying potential issues before they become critical.

Historical data for troubleshooting

Retains performance data for one year by default. Allows you to distinguish what is happening now as opposed to what happened in the recent past.

Comprehensive real-time, historical, and trending reports

Helps you with effective capacity planning, trend analysis, and network-status monitoring.

Management of multiple Cisco NAMs including the capability to invoke the NAM Web-based GUI

Provides the capability to easily navigate directly to Cisco NAMs for faster and further troubleshooting and analysis.


Caveats

This section provides information about known anomalies in the Cisco PVM 1.0.1 release. For this release, only one anomaly is known to exist.

CSCsg69591—PVM Build 1.0.1 displaying broken images in Monitor Overview

Symptom: PVM 1.0.1 Monitor Overview stats are displayed in broken GIFs.

Conditions: PVM 1.0.1 installed in latest RHEL 4u4 without Xvfb package. RHEL 4 install does not load Xvfb package by default.

Workaround: Manually install Xvfb package during RHEL 4 installation.

Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 Patch

The Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch provides several key enhancements and resolves online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical (OLAP) database purge issues. This patch includes functionality provided in Cisco PVM 1.0.2.2, Cisco PVM 1.0.1.2 and Cisco PVM 1.0.1.1 patches. If you install this patch, you do not need to install any previous Cisco PVM patch. You can install the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch on any of the following releases:

Cisco PVM 1.0.2.2

Cisco PVM 1.0.2

Cisco PVM 1.0.1.2

Cisco PVM 1.0.1.1

Cisco PVM 1.0.1

This patch brings your Cisco PVM release up to the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 level.

Key Enhancements

The Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch key enhancements are shown in Table 2.

Description

Support the NME-NAM Platform

The Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch supports Cisco Branch Router Series Network Analysis Module (NME-NAM-80S and NME-NAM-120S) data collection and reporting. After installing the patch, you can add NME-NAMs to Cisco PVM 1.0.2, collect data from the NME-NAMs, and generate reports on the collected data.


Note For licensing, Cisco PVM considers NM-NAM and NME-NAM to be the same. Similarly, NAM-1 and NAM-2 are considered the same.



Note This enhancement was included in the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.2 patch.


Support for NAM Release 3.6

The Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch supports Cisco Network Analysis Module Version 3.6 (NAM 3.6) for features present in NAM 3.4 and NAM 3.5. After installing the patch, you can collect the data from NAM 3.6 that you collected from NAM 3.4 and NAM 3.5.


Note The Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch does not support NAM 3.6 features that were not included in NAM 3.4 and NAM 3.5.



Note This enhancement was included in the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.2 patch.


Larger Oracle parameter SQL command line

Increase the Oracle parameter SQL command line size to accommodate the use of longer customized installation directory path names.

OLTP and OLAP fixes

OLTP and OLAP improvements fix the following issues:

Purge process jobs for the OLTP and OLAP databases are not initiated during base installations and do not run as required.

Purge job does not delete data older than retention period.

OLAP purge job is not created when installing on Cisco PVM 1.0.1.

Purge process uses hourly retention period for daily data.

OLAP purge process is purging hourly and daily data within the retention period.


Installing the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 Patch

You can install the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch on any of the following releases:

Cisco PVM 1.0.1.2

Cisco PVM 1.0.1.1

Cisco PVM 1.0.1

The estimated patch installation time after you execute the updatepvm command is less than one hour.


Note Cisco PVM Release 1.0.1.x must be installed before you install the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch.



Note To perform this procedure, you must have a Cisco.com user name and password. If you do not have a Cisco.com user name and password, you can apply for one at: http://tools.cisco.com/RPF/register/register.do.



Caution This patch truncates raw performance data if the purge jobs are missing. (The patch does not delete aggregated data.) If the installer detects missing purge process jobs, it asks whether you want to continue or abort the installation. Entering Y (Yes) continues the installation. The installation will truncate the raw performance data and install the missing purge jobs. Entering N (No) stops the installation without truncating the raw performance data, to allow you to archive the existing data. Enter -T to select deleted data. (For archiving data procedures, refer to the Cisco PVM User Guide.) After archiving the data, you must restart the patch installation.

To install the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch, complete the following steps:

Step 1 Go to the Cisco.com Network Management Software website:

Step 2 Under Small and Medium Business Network Management, click Network Analysis and Planning.

Step 3 At the Log In screen, enter your registered Cisco.com user name and password; then, click Log In.

Step 4 Expand the Cisco Performance Visibility Manager tree, then click Cisco Performance Visibility Manager 1.0.

Step 5 On the Downloads page, expand the Latest Releases folder, then click 1.0.2.3.

Step 6 Select the 1.0.2.3 release in the left list, then select the filename, PVM-1.0.2.3.tar.gz, on the right (under Sort By).

Step 7 On the Acceptance page, complete the user information fields, then click Accept.

Step 8 At the Download Image screen, click Download.

Step 9 On the Supporting Documents page, read the End User Software License Agreement and Download Rules, then click Agree.

Step 10 On the File Download dialog box, click Save.

Step 11 In the Save As dialog box, save the Cisco PVM1.0.2.3 patch package file to a temporary directory (such as /tmp) on the Cisco PVM server.

Step 12 Change to the PVM administrative user.

Step 13 Stop Cisco PVM:

/[install directory]/bin/pvm stop

Sample CLI:

$ pvm stop

Caution This step might take up to two hours to complete. If you stop Cisco PVM manually before the stop script is completed, aggregated data that is in progress will be lost.

Step 14 Install the patch:

a. Change to the root user.

b. Navigate to the directory where you placed the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch download, then untar the patch file:

tar zxf PVM-1.0.2.3.tar.gz

c. Change to the PVM 1.0.2.3 directory:

cd PVM-1.0.2.3

d. Run the ./updatepvm script.

Step 15 Start Cisco PVM by changing to the PVM administrative user, stopping the TNS Listener, then starting Cisco PVM:

su - pvmadm
lsnrctl stop
/[installation path]/bin/pvm start

Note If the Listener password is enabled, the following error.message will be displayed: Connecting to (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=cnam)) TNS-01169: The listener has not recognized the password.




Note After you install the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch, use the Cisco PVM Release 1.0.2 documentation for Cisco PVM procedures and information.


Uninstalling Cisco PVM 1.0.2

To uninstall Cisco PVM 1.0.2 after you install the Cisco PVM 1.0.2.3 patch, complete the following steps:


Step 1 Log in as the root user.

Step 2 Enter the uninstallpvm command:

./[install dir]/uninstall/uninstallpvm


Caution The uninstallpvm command uninstalls the entire Cisco PVM application including the Oracle database and Oracle data server. You cannot uninstall the patch.
